International hospitality management - Essay Example This was followed by hotels, motels, and Inns. The first hotel can be traced to City hotel in New York City in 1794 which started with 73 rooms (Schonwalder, 2000). Apart from accommodation, the hotel offered meetings rooms and soon became the social center of the city. This was the first building in America built especially to be a hotel. The first five star hotel was the Tremont House in Boston, built in 1829, which marked the beginning of first class service. The Hilton International The Hilton International started its journey in 1919 by Conrad Hilton when he took over a property in Texas. Its international arm, Conrad Hotels, had locations across Australia, England, Ireland, and Egypt among many others. By 1940 the group owned a chain of premium hotels worldwide but in 1960 it sold its international operations. In 1989 it also relinquished interests in its gaming companies and focused on core hotel business. Focusing on contracts and franchising, today Hilton Hotels Corporation is a leading hospitality company that owns, manages, and has franchised over 2000 hotels the country (Funding Universe, n.d.). The well-known brands under its chain include Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites, and Harrison Conference Centers. Marriott International Marriott International, Inc., with the spirit to serve, was formed in 1993 (Funding Universe1, n.d.). Before this, they were in the restaurant business but in 1993 they split the company in two ââ¬â lodging and contract services company, thus marking the beginning of Marriott International, Inc. Marriott International manages and franchises more than 1350 lodging properties under ten different hotel brands across the world. These include the Fairfield Inns and Suites, the Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, and New World brands. Its strategy to manage rather than own property has been found to be paying the Group rich dividends. With its property in 1957, Hyatt grew to a chain of 13 hotels by 1969. Conclusion Hotels and chains have grown and developed due to mergers and acquisitions (M&A), which is a common form of strategy and growth in every sector. This is used as a strategy to enhance profitability and survive in the competitive growth environment. Several major mergers and acquisitions took place in the hotel industry between 1979 and 2004 (Quek, 2011). However, M&A activities in the sector need financial support because of the high capital costs involved. Governance and Effecting Change in Schools Essay
Governance and Effecting Change in Schools - Essay Example But one must know that laws only can regulate the rights as well as responsibilities of teachers. I disagree with this court decision as the constitution and supreme law of this country is not in favor of forced actions. Teachers ordered their learners to rise and deliver the verses respectfully in unanimity. Moreover, broadcasting class learners in the Abington School District were bound to read the verses over a public-address system. Otherwise, teachers could be fired if they would refuse to participate and pupils occasionally were separated out from others if they did not stick together with others students in the daily reading (Phelps and Lehman, 2005). But Laws regulating schools along with teachers at 3 interrelated levels of federal, state, and local are the part of a larger and complex legal system. Teachers are responsible to understand content theyââ¬â¢re anticipated to teach to students. The third case, which was decided in 1943 was West Virginia State board of Education vs. Barnette et. al. It was a case of forced saluting ceremony and the decision in favor of very strict punishment in case any student or teacher decides against that. The appellees were citizens of West Virginia and the United States, and they rightfully disagreed to salute the flag as a compulsion. They were adamant that the flog is an image. This image however sacred cannot be placed above religion or will of the people. On the other hand the education department believed that there are limits to everyoneââ¬â¢s authority and symbolism remains a primitive and effective way of communicating ideas (West Virginia state board of Education vs. Barnette, 1943). I agree to the Education department in general that such symbolism teaches and communicates the national values. However, the strict punishments related to it make it a forceful act which might make it fail in serving its purpose. To me it app ears ethically wrong to force anyone to

Philosophy of Science - Does Creationism qualify as science Essay
Philosophy of Science - Does Creationism qualify as science - Essay Example This new aspect erroneously emphasizes that both the earth and universe were born some 10,000 years ago and the present life form of the earth is the outcome of catastrophes like floods. Some creation scientists again hold that human beings were born out of divine intervention for the presence of intelligence absent in others. The creationism aspect of science on account of the above examples is countering problem for the proper teaching of science. (Skehan & Nelson, 1-2). Thus, the activities of creation scientists are aiming to draw a rift between experimental nature of science and a scientific approach based on false dogmas and religious ideologies. Creationism which fails to impart an experimental outlook fails to be qualified as Science. Controversial Theories of Creation Science against Science Scientific Creationism is observed to largely mingle religious ideologies with scientific doctrines causing the formation of erroneous facts which cultivate an environment of misinformat ion. In fact, the doctrines rendered by Creation Science which states that the formation and destruction of life forms on the planet were the outcome of a deluge were observed to bear close resemblance to Biblical theories. These facts rendered by Creation Science draw controversies for Science has already stated the age of the earth as amounting to some billions of years. With regards to the development of the large diversity of flora and fauna Science has successfully shown that these diversities sprouted out owing to the effects of evolution. The facts stated by Science gain ground for being supported by experimental observations conducted through the study of fossils which claims that evolution is a spontaneous phenomenon and not merely a theory. An endeavor to intensify the realm of Creation Science to reach the Science classrooms was largely contested on several grounds. The Law of the land observed such moves of Creation Science as totally unconstitutional due to mainly three aspects. Firstly, it was observed that such a drive affected the secularity of the region and legislation. It is because the approach of Creation Science is considered to have strong linkages to the Catholic religion. Secondly, it was held that the Creation Scienceââ¬â¢s approach was involved more in spreading religion than centered on imparting knowledge. Thirdly the approach made by Creation Science was also felt as anti-governmental activity and thus an endeavor was made to restrict its further development. Several schools of the American region were strictly directed to disallow the professing of the doctrines of Creation Science. The activities of Creation Science however did counter less halt as it came out with the doctrine of ââ¬ËIntelligent Designââ¬â¢. The theory of ââ¬ËIntelligent Designââ¬â¢ is considered to be propounded by the Creation Science theorists to counter the strength of legislative actions imposed upon it. The theory of ââ¬ËIntelligent Desi gnââ¬â¢ propounded by the Creation Scientists presents itself in two parts. The first part aimed at totally criticizing the theory of evolution framed by Charles Darwin. It aimed at stating that the theory of evolution was totally wrong and practically suffered from absence of a strong base. In the second part the concept of ââ¬ËIntelligent Designââ¬â¢ tried to focus that each of the different life forms on earth including the intelligent human beings were the actions of some

The Value of Money Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
The Value of Money - Essay Example Some of the items included a baby doll, a puzzle of teddy bears, baby clothes for the baby doll, and a package of M&Ms for my sweet tooth. I was putting the items in the cart without my moms knowledge, hiding them to make sure she would not see them until we were checking out. Once at the checkout, my mom would put each of the items on the conveyer belt. When she came to the items that I had picked out, she shook her head and asked me ââ¬Å"are you paying for the items that you have put in the cart?â⬠. I answered ââ¬Å"No, I donââ¬â¢t have any money.â⬠. My mom replied ââ¬Å"You know money doesnââ¬â¢t grow on trees. You need to learn that you have to earn your money to buy the things that you want.â⬠My mom told the cashier that everything that I picked out would have to go back, except for the M&Mââ¬â¢s. After this incident, my mom decided to help me learn about the value of money and how to earn it. She started having me do chores around the house so that I could earn money to buy some of the items I wanted. Although this helped me understand that money was not free, I remember thinking how unfair it was that I had to earn money to buy my toy(s). Now that Iââ¬â¢m grown up, I have a great job, and a family of my own. I have learned that not only do I have to earn the money I need, I have to manage my money in order to pay bills and buy the item(s) I want. Every trip to the store now consists of me asking myself whether or not I need the item as opposed to wanting the item, regardless of whether I can afford the item or not. During my most recent trip to Wal-Mart, I strolled up and down the grocery aisle, picking up the items that were on my grocery list. After I was finished getting all with my list, I found myself wandering around looking for anything else that I might want. My first stop on my whimsical items splurge took me to the candy aisle for a big bag of M&Ms
